Realistic, soft, but the black coloration on the tail and appendages do look like smudges.
I initially thought this was a defect too (like the previous reviewer), so I contacted the merchant.
He confirmed that all of the ones in his inventory have the same appearance.
He said "it's just the coloration of the lobster".
(If you look closely at the Amazon photo you can see a little bit of it, but the black on the one I received is much more prominent).
The underside of the lobster is completely red, so it does seem clear that the black was intentional.
So I will keep it, confident that it is not dirt.
But I would have preferred it to be all red.

Received the toy and initially thought it was in good condition, but then noticed upon closer inspection that the appendages had black smudges. Not sure if that was from the packing or something else, but unsatisfactory nonetheless.
