 Perfect surprise gift for an NCIS lover.Jan 15, 2011

My wife is an avid fan of NCIS. Abby is her favorite character. In a couple of episodes we noticed Abby's form of a security blanket, her plush hippo, "Bert". Bert is remembered for his flatulance when squeezed. I thought it would be a nice surprise for my wife if I could find a Bert for her. After some research I learned that Abby's Bert was made by Folkmanis, but sadly had been discontinued for some time. For one year I scoured the secondary market but couldn't find one, so in desperation I contacted Folkmanis to beg their consideration for bringing it back. I told them that with the almost cult following NCIS has there would be plenty of adults out there who would like to see it available again. To my amazement, six months later, they resurrected the hippo. I suspect that the folks behind NCIS would prohibit Folkmanis from mentioning the TV show in their marketing, but believe me, this is Bert. When Folkmanis brought him back there was a very slight difference since Abby's hippo. This version is about an inch and a half smaller. I don't know if Bert was actually a hand puppet, but this one is. Your hand goes in the underside so you can make his mouth move. As for the flatulance, no that's not a feature, or even an option. But during my research I learned that Bert's trademark was just a post-production special effect anyway. This hippo is well built, soft and cuddly. Any child would be happy to have it. But I think its real value is for the lovers of NCIS out there.

This (like every Folkmanis puppet) is very well made. Great fabric and great detail. We have a zoo of Folkmanis puppets, and everyone of them are very well made. Highly recommend!
FYI
Folkmanis was originally known as Folktails just in case you come across any from a while back.

This is the EXACT same hippo they use for NCIS in Abby's lab (or, as she once called it, "Labby"). Although it doesn't fart, none of the hippos do, so might as well get the REAL thing! I love mine! I think its JUST GREAT!!!!! DO BUY!!!!!

I got this hippo to make Bert the Farting hippo from NCIS. What's really nice about this one, is that it is a puppet, so instead of making a long ugly seam down his belly, i could just take out the stitching where the puppet part starts. This make the seam virtually invisible a much easier to sew. I love it! It is just the right size for Bert and for hugging!

My husband collects hippos so I thought this would make a great birthday gift. Unfortunately this hippo looks more like a rat. Its mouth curls in a snarl and it has slanted eyes. Its body is also hunched over looking like an armadillo. It does NOT look like the cute and friendly animals in the picture.
I'm returning it tomorrow.
